Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road - 12 Apostles

Each section of the Australian coastline seems to have a nickname: the Sapphire Coast, the Gold Coast, the Surf Coast, and more! We recently drove the Great Ocean Road, from Melbourne in Victoria, to Adelaide in South Australia. And the Ocean certainly is Great! There are some spectacular views, in this country full of spectacular views.

We drove through small towns with very British names like Torquay and Anglesea, and others with very non-British names such as Warnambool, Yambuk and Narrawong. The map below shows the area of southern Australia that the road covers.

Construction of the Great Ocean Road was begun in 1918 after WWI, and was seen as a way to not only employ returning servicemen, but also to memorialise those who had died in the war. It additionally provided a long-needed communication route from Lorne to Geelong, which previously was only possible on a rough coach track, or by sea. The road was officially opened on 26 November 1932. There’s an interesting informational section in the Lorne Visitor Information Centre.

The big draw in this area is the rocks along the coast called the 12 Apostles. There aren’t twelve, and I’m not quite sure how they got this name, but they are indeed a sight to see, even though you’re sharing it with many others!

It really is mesmeric watching the light and shade play on the water and rocks. It was hard to choose, so here are just some of my photos from that day.
