Photographing Faeries

Hummingbirds move so very fast, it’s hard to photograph them. ย My regular camera seems to have died (I need to see if it can be repaired), and Chris tried taking stills and video with his video camera, but I think the most successful and fun photos came from the auto option on the smart phone, that takes bursts of photos with one press of the button.

The motion blur of the hummingbirds’ wings makes them look like photoshopped faeries. I had lots of fun putting those stills into a video!

We were at Selvatura Park, in the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. It really is a birder’s paradise here! The cloud forest itself is so lush, with so many shades of green it dazzles your eyes.

There are birds and animals beyond number. Here are some of my favourite photos and videos from Monteverde and Arenal: Turn the sound up when you watch this video of the mating call of ย the three wattled Bellbird!

While we were at Selvatura, we also did the zipline tour through the canopy. It takes over 2 hours, and it is beyond thrilling and exhilarating to go zipping above the trees, attached only by some canvas webbing and metal connectors! Chris decided to do the “Superman” option on the final zipline, where he was strapped into a special suit, that hung him horizontally from the zipline, looking down into the canopy!

We enjoyed a night walk in the forest, where we saw a grey fox, coatimundi, kinkajou, sleeping toucans, snakes and tarantulas!

ARENAL VOLCANO

When we stayed at the Arenal Volcano area, we did more nature hikes in the forest, and saw more beautiful animals and lush greenery.

Before we travelled round some more of Costa Rica, we spent some time at Pacuare Turtle Reserve, and you can read about that by clicking here.

  1. Amazing! That stick insect needs to be renamed to branch insect. I miss seeing hummingbirds every summer, always amazed. Costa Rica looks amazing!
